Preliminary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of a man and woman looking directly into the camera, with the man’s arms around the woman protectively. It is a medium long shot showing the couple’s body and only a little bit of the woman’s boot. They are caught up in some kind of windy region as their hair seems to be blowing around and therefore the man’s arm is wrapped around the woman, protecting her from something. The background of the photo is a dull grey, almost matching the man’s suit and the photograph covers the whole of the magazine cover. Behind them is the ‘Total Film’ masthead and in front of them are six cover-lines in bright yellow and white. Above the masthead are four different selling lines in white with yellow stars in between them. The barcode is visible in the medium top right side of the cover.

Masthead:
Total Film’s masthead is very bold and distinctive as the word ‘Film’ is the biggest font on the magazine cover and the word ‘Total’ is in red and has been inserted in the ‘F’ of the word ‘Film’. This could have been done to demonstrate the popularity of the magazine that the Title can be fiddled with and hard to recognise but people will still know what magazine it is.
Character:
The cover photography is not written.
Composition:
They are caught up in some kind of windy region as their hair seems to be blowing around and therefore the man’s arm is wrapped around the woman, protecting her from something. This could be seen as a typical romantic shot as the males generally protect the females.
Costume: The male is wearing a grey suit trouser, a white shirt and a thick grey jacket/blazer over it. His hair seemed as though it was neatly slicked back despite the one piece hanging by his forehead which seemed to have come loose by the wind. The female is wearing a silk jumpsuit with brown leather boots.
NVC: Their Non verbal communications are as if they are in some sort of danger. The female is cuddled close to the man’s chest and their eyes are squinted with mouth slightly open to give the affect that they are looking at something scary.
